Start With the Devil, End With an Angel: Our San Diego Donut Tour in Little Italy
Here's the joke our guides wait all morning to tell. The San Diego donut tour opens at Devil's Dozen. It closes at Donut Bar, whose logo is a donut with angel wings. Devil to angel in four stops. You'll groan, and then you'll take a picture of the sign.
India Street, Kettner and the tuna fleet
Little Italy sits just north of downtown, a neighborhood of piazzas, Italian flags and sidewalk cafes. After the first box at Devil's Dozen, we work our way along India Street and Kettner Boulevard, past outdoor dining terraces, small plazas and a lot of murals. Your guide fills in the backstory: the Italian fishing families who settled here and built a waterfront community around the tuna trade, long before anyone was selling cannoli to tourists.
Frost Me is the second stop, with morning buns and pastries. Nonna comes next and the treats turn properly Italian, Nutella pastries and cannoli. And then the angel. Donut Bar is where you'll meet the grilled cheese and bacon donut, which sounds like a dare and tastes like breakfast and lunch had a good idea together.
The neighborhood keeps changing with the calendar, too. Art walks in spring. Decorations in fall. Green donuts around St. Patrick's Day. Cruise passengers often join us on a port day, since Little Italy is a short walk from the waterfront. If the sun is strong, box up the last treats and eat them later by the bay.
