Santa Fe Doesn't Do Donuts the Usual Way, So Neither Do We
Fair warning: this is our least donut-y donut tour. Santa Fe has its own sweet traditions, and it would be a shame to walk past them looking for a glazed ring. So we built a half-mile walking tour around churros, biscochitos and green chile instead.
Half a mile around the Plaza
We start on the front patio of Cafe Des Artistes on Lincoln Avenue, a few steps from the Plaza, with warm beignets made in house. Then onto the Plaza itself. It has been the city's gathering place for centuries, framed by adobe buildings and shaded benches, with Native American artisans laying out jewelry under the portal. Your guide talks Spanish colonial Santa Fe as you pass the New Mexico History Museum, and the artists who put this town on the map when you pause outside the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
35 Degrees North Coffee, a local roaster, pours the next cup. With it come biscochitos from Santa Fe Biscochito Company: traditional anise, red chile, lemon, raspberry. If you've never had chile in a cookie, today's the day.
Wolf and Mermaid Enchanted Coffee Cafe is the savory turn, a green chile cheese croissant that tends to quiet the group for a minute. The walk ends at Fusion Delicias Cafe. It is very pink. You will want a photo. The churros are warm.
Ask about the state cookie
Yes, New Mexico has an official state cookie, and it's the biscochito. Crisp, cinnamon-dusted shortbread, usually flavored with anise, baked for weddings, holidays and pretty much any family gathering worth the name. Eat one with local coffee and you understand something real about this place.
Put that next to chile, the state's other obsession, and you get a food tour that couldn't happen anywhere else. The Santa Fe Churros, Biscochitos & Sweet Treats Tour is short on distance and long on time to linger, so ask your guide where to eat dinner. They have opinions.
