A San Antonio Donut Tour That Goes Below Street Level

Most of downtown San Antonio happens up at street level. The good part happens one flight down.

We meet in a downtown hotel lobby at Paris Baguette for a first donut and a drink, then head for the stairs. The River Walk runs below the city on shaded stone paths, under cypress trees and arched footbridges, past patio after patio. Your guide will tell you how the river became the center of local life, and why San Antonians get a little protective about it.

Pan dulce, and a little heat

Back upstairs, La Panadería brings the Mexican baking tradition that runs deep in this city. You'll get a soft concha with its crackly sugar shell. You'll also get a savory jalapeño cheese croissant, and yes, your guide asks about spice tolerance before handing those out. It's a food tour, not a dare.

Voodoo Doughnut is next, with its loud colors and oversized creations, and then a short detour into the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum, where more than a century of Texas curiosities hang on the walls. Murals keep popping up between blocks. Then Alamo Plaza opens up in front of you, and the old mission church is right there, smaller than many people expect and somehow more moving for it.

The loop ends where it started, back down on the River Walk, with one last sweet treat by the water.

Go early

Our San Antonio River Walk Donut Tour runs in the morning on purpose. The river is quiet, the air is still cool, and a walking tour through downtown feels a lot easier before the Texas sun gets serious. You get the river, the Alamo and a mix of conchas and classic American donuts in one easy loop, and you're done in time for lunch on a patio you spotted along the way.
