Beach or Murals? Picking Your Miami Donut Tour
Miami has two donut tours, and they could hardly be more different. One walks you through Art Deco South Beach to the ocean. The other drops you into the street art of Wynwood. Both are a walking tour with plenty of eating, both end happy, and our guides lead them in English or Spanish, which suits a city where you'll hear both in every cafe.
South Beach: pastel buildings, Cuban coffee
The South Beach Oceanfront Donut Tour starts at De Lucia Bakery Buon Pane on 5th Street, with Italian bomboloni piped full of filling. Then the food tour heads into the Art Deco Historic District. Your guide will point out the porthole windows and neon trim and explain how 1930s Miami Beach dressed itself up as a resort town in pastel paint.
Las Olas Cafe brings the Cuban side of the city: flaky guava and cheese pastelitos and a shot of Cuban coffee strong enough to carry you the rest of the way. Rosetta Bakery has cannoli and tiramisu. After that it's Ocean Drive, past the Renaissance Revival mansion Gianni Versace once owned, with the water flashing between buildings. A French bakery handles the finale, and it's buttery.
Wynwood: warehouses that turned into a gallery
The Wynwood Art District Donut Tour opens at The Salty Donut, a Miami-born shop with a habit of inventive flavors. From there you wander through warehouses that became an open-air gallery. The murals get painted over and replaced all the time, so no two walks look quite alike. Bring your phone.
Walt Grace Vintage is a cafe surrounded by classic cars and guitars, and it serves a guava and cheese croissant. Voodoo Doughnut goes playful with flavors like churro cheesecake and mango tango. And keep an eye out at the end. There's a surprise.
Sailing out of PortMiami? Both tours fit nicely on the day before or after a cruise.
