Three Donut Shops, One Street: Our West LA Donut Tour on West 3rd
Yes, you walk. In LA.
Nobody walks in Los Angeles, the saying goes. We do, for about a mile, and it's lovely. The walking tour starts at Truman's Bakery, home of the baked Fonut, which exists to prove a donut doesn't strictly need a fryer. Churro, strawberry and vanilla latte are the usual suspects.
From there the route runs along West 3rd Street through Beverly Grove, a stretch of low storefronts and palm-lined side streets right on the edge of West Hollywood. Your guide fills the blocks with neighborhood history and the longer story of how Los Angeles fell so hard for donuts in the first place (there's a reason the city has so many). Sidecar Doughnuts is next. They fry in small batches all day, so the huckleberry or the butter and salt you get is fresh.
The finish is inside the Original Farmers Market, a maze of produce stands and lunch counters under a clock tower that has fed Angelenos since the 1930s. Bob's Coffee & Doughnuts has been frying classics there for decades. A maple bar, a raised glazed or an apple fritter, eaten among the stalls. The Grove is right next door if you'd like to keep wandering.
What's in the case this month
Southern California doesn't do much in the way of winter, but the donut case keeps a calendar anyway. Spring means berry parfait and strawberry buttermilk. Summer gets passion fruit pavlova and Earl Grey citrus. Fall is pumpkin, obviously. When the holidays come round, our West LA Holiday Donut Tour walks the same route with festive flavors like holiday apple pie and gingerbread from our partners when they're available.
A lot of our guests are Southern Californians from Long Beach, Orange County and the Inland Empire who have driven down West 3rd a hundred times and never once parked. This food tour fixes that. Staying near the beach instead? Our Santa Monica tour is a short drive west.
