Doughnuts, the Ha'penny Bridge and a Bit of Irish: Our Dublin Walking Tour
South side
The Dublin doughnut tour sets off from The Rolling Donut on South King Street, a few steps from St Stephen's Green and the Gaiety Theatre. First doughnut in hand, you get a quick run through the city's Viking and Georgian past. Then it's along towards Dame Street and into Temple Bar: cobbled lanes, painted pub fronts, a busker or two, and stories of the writers, rebels and characters who made Dublin what it is. Expect a sweet stop or two along the way, often something warm and freshly baked.
North side
You cross the River Liffey on the Ha'penny Bridge. The name comes from the toll once charged to walk over it, and your guide will explain why the river still splits the city's personality in two. On the north side, the walk takes in O'Connell Bridge and O'Connell Street, where the General Post Office still carries marks from the 1916 Rising. It's a quiet moment on a cheerful morning. The finish is at Offbeat Donuts, with inventive flavours and seasonal specials to round things off.
Mind your Irish
There's more than sugar on this food tour. You'll pick up some folklore, a few words of Irish and, finally, a working definition of "craic". Children get to taste first, which they take very seriously. And if it's your birthday, there's a candle and a round of Happy Birthday sung as Gaeilge.
From November, the Dublin Downtown and Temple Bar Holiday Doughnut Tour adds Christmas lights and Irish festive customs, from the candle in the window to the Wren Boys of St Stephen's Day. The rest of the year, the Dublin Downtown and Temple Bar Doughnut Tour runs the same streets without the tinsel.
