A Doughnut on the Pier: Our Brighton Walking Tour Through The Lanes
Twittens, smugglers and a pot of tea
We start at Glazed, an independent doughnut shop, with your first bite of the morning in hand before you've properly said hello. Then into The Lanes. These narrow twittens and alleyways were once the old fishing town of Brighthelmstone, and today they're crammed with jewellers, antique dealers and cafés no bigger than a front room. Your guide fills in the gaps: smugglers, Regency high society, and how a fishing village became the place Londoners escaped to for the weekend.
Stone Ground is next, where the doughnuts are made from scratch. After that comes a sit down at Bird & Blend Tea Co for a tea tasting, some of it fruity, some of it matcha and a few blends that are frankly a bit odd (in a good way). If the wind has picked up off the Channel, you'll be glad of it.
Down to the sea
From there the walk passes St Peter's Church and heads for the seafront. You'll hear about the skeleton of the West Pier, still standing out in the water, and the Victorian bathing machines that used to wheel bathers into the waves. The finish is on the Palace Pier, with a doughnut and the sea in front of you. Hard to argue with.
It's a food tour that works whatever the forecast, which in Brighton is useful. Rain just means a longer cuppa. Day trippers come down from London on the train, and the station is an easy walk from the start.
In the run up to Christmas, the holiday doughnut tour takes the same route with added festive cheer, including mince pies by the ice rink. Book the year round Brighton and The Lanes Doughnut Tour any other time, or the Brighton and The Lanes Holiday Doughnut Tour when the lights go up.
